Hilary Ison Psychotherapy in Vancouver

I have an open and curious mind, reflected in my work experience in addictions, homelessness, acute care, neurorehabilitation, queer services, dive bars, painting houses, and on stage and in the studio as a musician. These diverse experiences prepare me to meet your unique history with compassion and acceptance.

From early on, I had a hunch that I wanted to be a therapist - I kept finding myself in a quiet corner at parties having heart to heart conversations with strangers! However, I was living in Montreal and didn’t quite have the language skills to do community work there. I did my undergrad degree at McGill in esoteric things like women’s studies, queer theory, philosophy, film studies, and political theory. After graduating, I worked as a singer and bartender for a while before moving back to the West Coast in 2014.

It was then that I first had the chance to explore social service work as a tenant support worker in the Downtown Eastside, and discovered that my hunch was accurate. It lit me up to connect with people, hear their stories, and offer compassion and support. I have been working in that community on and off ever since, and currently work there part-time as a therapist.

With this work experience and self-knowledge, I went back to school to become a social worker, and simultaneously started taking trainings in counselling and therapy. As a registered social worker I worked in hospitals, a neurological rehabilitation center, and a DTES outreach team. Eventually I finished my Master’s in Counselling, where my research was about somatic disorders (e.g. functional neurological disorder, somatoform disorder, conversion disorder), trauma, and emotion-focused treatment.

Counselling also helped me personally during a time when I was really struggling, and continues to be an important support for me. I consider it a deep honour and privilege to occupy the role of therapist, and do my best to take that responsibility seriously.

I have a parallel career in music. I’ve been a musician since I could walk, and have carried that practice into my professional life as a singer and burgeoning composer/songwriter in classical, experimental, and folk music traditions. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, reading, watching movies, cooking, knitting, spending time outside, dancing, seeing live music, meditating, journaling, and napping. You know, the regular stuff :)

I bring my authentic self to our work: loving and direct, accepting and challenging, serious and playful, creative and analytical, grounded and passionate, queer AF and open to all. No AI practice, just human interaction.
